Is Now the Time for A Career Change?

There comes the point in everyone’s career where it is time to take a moment to re-evaluate; re-evaluate where you are now and where you would like to be. With everything going on in the world right now and with our current job market, that time of reflection might be now. If that sounds like your current situation, it can be unsettling. Most workers are hesitant to take that leap and move forward in another direction in their careers. Switching industries, moving to a new market, or doing something completely different, takes a lot of courage and grit. Here are a few things to think about if you feel that it’s time for a career change.

Why are you looking for a change?

You first need to ask yourself a few questions. Why do you want a new job? And what are you looking for in a new career or employer? There could be numerous reasons why you are ready to make a career move. You might be looking for an employer that offers more flexibility, such as working from home. Maybe you’re looking for a leadership role where you can make an overall more significant impact in an organization. Or you might be looking for a new challenge and ready to take on an entirely different role. Whatever your reasons are, write them down and try to find connections between them. You will likely find commonalities, which will help you determine what direction you want to head towards.

What’s the outlook of your new career path

If you have decided where you want to go with your career, congrats! That’s an exhilarating moment. But don’t forget to do your research. Is this new industry or sector volatile or stable? Does it have tremendous growth, or is it more stagnant? These are things you should be thinking of as you weigh the pros and cons of your decision. So, it may be the perfect time to make the leap into a new field! Some industries are experiencing extensive growth because of the pandemic. Here are the top ten jobs with the most demand in July.

Don’t be afraid to take the plunge

Many of us are too fearful of making a big career change; it’s challenging to convince ourselves to leave the comfort zone of our work expertise. If you are a seasoned vet in your field, it’s discouraging to make that leap. Robin Arzon, the head of Peloton’s fitness programming, was on Jessi Hempel’s Podcast Hello Monday. She briefly described her transition from being a corporate attorney for seven years to a career in fitness. One of her biggest points she discusses is people’s reluctance just to take the plunge and go for it. “Say yes before you think you are ready. I see so many folks hesitate to throw their hands up” and make that plunge, says Arzon. She explains that many of us wait until we become knowledgeable or trained; however, she expresses that we should not be afraid to jump in and learn as we go. In other words, there is never a perfect time to make a career move, but have faith in yourself and go with your gut!
