Imposter Syndrome Is Completely Sabotaging Your Job Search

If you continually get to the interview stage without receiving an offer, there’s a really good chance that the culprit is Impostor Syndrome. According to Merriam-Webster, “Impostor syndrome is commonly understood as a false and sometimes crippling belief that one’s successes are the product of luck or fraud rather than skill.” And some estimates state that around 70% of people have impostor syndrome, so you’re definitely not alone! But the good news is that it is TOTALLY possible to overcome. Doing these three things will help you conquer those feelings of inadequacies and land that dream job:

  1. Fake it til you make it

As Tina Fey once said, “just say yes and you’ll figure it out afterwards.” This requires a heavy dose of bravery, but it will be worth it. Most likely, you already have what it takes, it just FEELS like you don’t. So jump in feet first and gather the tools to master it along the way.

  1. Meditate

No matter how you feel about meditation, job interviews are the prime place to practice. Multiple times before the interview (the night before, the morning of, while you’re in the car, even in the lobby) take a moment to close your eyes, and slow your breathing.  Just taking a second to bring mindfulness to yourself will increase your confidence, slow down those negative thoughts, and give you the strength to not only get through an interview, but totally rock it!

  1. Positive affirmations

It may sound cheesy, and feel incredibly silly, but positive affirmations have proven to work time after time. Words are extremely powerful and have a way of manifesting greatness. Whether you say them out loud in front of a mirror like the kiddo in the video above, or write them on strategically placed sticky notes throughout your home, come up with a few positive, encouraging reminders. They can be anything from things you’re grateful for, your personal strengths, or even goals you want to realize. (We love this list from Rachel Gadiel!)

Gone are the days of “What’s your greatest weakness?” Employers are now trying to determine your fit within their company through behavioral interview questions. They want you to tell stories from your past experiences and actually picture yourself in this position.

  1. The Little Stuff Matters

Employers are now listening and watching at ALL times. So your interactions with the receptionist, how you spend your time in the waiting room, and what you order at that lunch interview are affecting what the hiring manager thinks of you. Always strive to be courteous and professional, from the parking lot to the post-interview thank you note!

  1. Show Your Authenticity

Authenticity is valued above all else in today’s society. Yes, you should still be professional throughout your interview (always). But there’s more room for you to show your genuine personality. Hiring Managers can see through your “this is what I am supposed to say” interview answers and are looking past that to try and determine who you are.

Not having a job is a huge fear for many people in the job market that we live in. Even if you are unsatisfied in your current position, it can be scary to think of the possibility of losing stability. When we have a job, (no matter how unhappy we are) we know what to expect. Even if you get that nagging feeling pulling you towards something else, you keep repeating the same mantra: “the boss is good the people are nice, I am good at my job, I receive a steady paycheck.” We get comfortable with our life and begin to rely on the status quo.

But, there is more out there! Believe it or not, your dream job is out there and it’s within your grasp. You just have to take the leap. (Even if it feels like jumping off a cliff with no landing in sight.) It’s up to you to solve the anxieties, uncertainties, and fears surrounding the search for a new position. The best way to do this? Attack fear at the heart by taking control of what you can. In general, we can always control two things: our thoughts, and our actions. Here are some steps you can take to take control of your job search and stomp out that fear.

  1. Take 15 minutes a day to continue your education in your field of expertise to stay up to date on the latest trends and advances in the market.
  2. Be passively looking for the next move in your career. Many people feel that it is disloyal to keep oneself periodically searching for the next great opportunity, but that is simply not true.
  3. Increase your self-awareness. In the short 96 page book “Who Moved My Cheese” the author Dr. Spencer Johnson addresses the traps that we sometimes fall into by not being aware of the ever changing environment we wake up to daily.
  4. Be prepared for anything. Preparation is the key to recognizing great opportunity when it knocks. The best opportunity may be where you’re currently at, or it may be the one I’m calling you about.
  5. Keep your skills sharp and relevant, your eyes open, and be aware of your value to the industry.

2017 has started with a bang in the employment world in February 2017 the Private Sector Employment increased by 298,000 jobs up from 246,000 in January 2017 according to ADP Research Institute. Employers are inundated with application and resumes in the folders on their laptops.
